Background
John Kummer was born and raised in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He earned his B.A. from Grand Valley State University and graduated magna cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law. While in law school, John completed the Geoffrey Fieger Trial Practice Institute, an intensive two-year courtroom-advocacy program. He was also selected for a Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM) internship, for which he was assigned to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office. John subsequently interned in the Corrections Division of the Michigan Attorney General’s Office and the Criminal Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan.
John began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Julie A. Nicholson (ret.) in the 52-3 District Court before joining the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, where he served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in both the District Court and Circuit Court Divisions. During his tenure at the Prosecutor’s Office, John also lectured at the Oakland Police Academy.
After nearly seven years in the public sector, John sought to broaden his practice beyond criminal law and joined Adkison, Need, Allen & Rentrop, PLLC. As part of the firm’s Municipal Law Group, he counsels municipal clients and represents private clients in a wide range of civil litigation matters. He continues to draw on the trial skills he developed at the Prosecutor’s Office, serving as local ordinance prosecutor for Commerce Township, Milford Township, the Village of Milford, the Village of Leonard, and Springfield Township. John also handles the firm’s municipal tax appeal matters, defending ad valorem assessment appeals before the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
With more than five years of municipal law practice, John has developed a particular interest in property rights, land use, and other zoning-related issues. Outside the office, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children and following Michigan State and Detroit sports.
